The Lindenwood University Education Center, in cooperation with select educational agencies and recognized experts in the field, will provide graduate opportunities to students entered in approved workshop activities. Up to six hours of credit can be applied toward requirements of the Masters in Education degree at Lindenwood University. 

Lindenwood University is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Learning of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Graduate credit is earned through the Lindenwood University Cooperative Credit Program.


Course Description

This course will help educators faced with unique situations that challenge their abilities to understand students, parents and peers.  Our society is changing daily, and so are the problems that students bring to school.  This course will provide an opportunity to look objectively at the role anger and conflict play in our schools and society.  Anger and conflict manifest itself into many problems.


Goals Of The Course:

1. Explore techniques that will aid in helping teachers look objectively at their anger problems.

2. Explore various techniques that have been proven to be successful in understanding the psychology of anger. 

3. Identify and learn new techniques of developing a positive self-esteem for themselves and their students. 

4. Identify and study characteristics that seem to help human beings handle power and control with compassion and empathy. 

5. To present structured experiences for improving human relation skills in dealing with our students. 

6. Explore ways to be proactive in making the school and classroom a positive environment for learning. 


Objectives Of The Course:


1. Participants will be able to collaborate, listen and share in a more productive manner with colleagues and students regarding anger problems.

2. Participants will be able to implement strategies that will assist in understanding the psychology of anger. 

3. Participants will be able to develop an increased awareness of strategies that can help them deal with power and control in a positive manner. 

4. Participants will be able to have guided experiences in techniques that have proven successful in helping raise the level of self-esteem in teachers and students. 

5. Participants will be able to identify human relation skills needed for proactive communication with people. 

6. Participants will be able to use various techniques to help students achieve academically and be proactive in making the school a positive environment for learning. 

 

Text:

A materials fee of $15 will be required for each course.

In addition, the instructor will provide a compendium of textual materials.

Course Requirements:

Participants will be required to contribute a minimum of 15 hours for each graduate credit they earn.
 

EWS  913   Anger And Conflict In Our Schools And Society I (1 credit hours)

A     Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in a research paper, project, or book report which meets the following criteria associated with scholarship: (5 - 8 pages)

            1.  clarity of expression

            2.  understanding of and facility in articulating concepts and terms pertaining to the chosen field of study

            3.  thoroughness with which subject is presented

            4.  organization and flow of concepts.

B    Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in four reflection papers which clearly and thoroughly address the questions listed below regarding the reflection paper.

C    Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in two reflection papers which clearly and thoroughly address the questions listed below regarding the reflection paper.

D     Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in no work.

F     Grade    Does not attend class sessions and turns in no work.

EWS  914   Anger And Conflict In Our Schools And Society II (2 credit hours)

A    Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in a research paper, project, or book report which meets the following criteria asssociated with scholorship:  (8 - 11 pages)

            1. clarity of expression

            2. understanding and facility in articulating concepts and terms pertaining to the chosen field of study

            3. thoroughness with which subject is presented
           
            4.  organization and flow of concepts.

B    Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in six reflection papers which clearly and thoroughly address the questions listed below regarding the reflection paper.

C    Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in three reflection papers which clearly and thoroughly address the questions listed below regarding the reflection paper.

D    Grade    Must attend all classes and turn in no work.

F    Grade    Does not attend class sessions and turns in no work.

EWS  915 Anger And Conflict In Our Schools And Society III (3 credit hours)

A    Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in a research paper, project, or book report which meets the following criteria associated with scholarship:  (13 - 16 pages)

            1.  clarity of expression.

            2.  understanding of and facility in articulating concepts and terms pertaining to the chosen field of study.

            3.  thoroughness with which subject is presented.

            4.  organization and flow of concepts.

B    Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in ten reflection papers which clearly and thoroughly address the questions listed below regarding the reflection paper.

C    Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in five reflection papers which clearly and thoroughly address the questions listed below regarding the reflection paper.

D    Grade    Must attend all class sessions and turn in no work.

F    Grade    Does not attend class sessions and turns in no work. 

Subject Matter Of Papers:

All reflection papers, research papers and projects must be on a topic related to the course title.  The instructor, Dr.  Charles Jackard, will provide a suggested list of topics and movies/videos that students may read and research.  Any other topics or movies/videos students read, view or do research on must be approved by Dr. Jackard.

Reflection Papers:  (1 - 2 pages)

This is basically a statement of opinion about pieces of writing or movies-videos viewed.  The following should be included in the paper:

    1.  Author, Title, Source, Date and Pages

    2.  What are your reactions to the article or movie/video?

    3.  What is the article or movie/video trying to tell us?

    4.  How does the article or movie/video relate to the course you are taking?

    5.  What is the general value of the article or movie/video?

    6.  What general statements can be made about the article or movie/video?  ( summary of article or movie/video )

Research Paper, Project, Or Book Report:

The following should be included in the research paper, project, or book report:

    1.  Title Page

    2.  Table of Contents

    3.  Text of the Paper

    4.  Footnotes of Text

    5.  Bibliography
