Course Description
Since 1980, 400,000 people have been killed by some form of
violence in the United States. This is more people than
were killed in World War l and World War ll. A large
percentage of this loss of life involved our youth. Most
school surveys will list violence and discipline as two of their major problems. We must stop denying this problem and develop workable
programs for reaching the increasing number of troubled
youth in our schools. This course will include an
examination of techniques for helping students gain and
maintain control of their lives. This course is also designed to encourage and stimulate discussion regarding the use of
compassion rather than power as a deterrent to delinquent
behavior.
Goals Of The Course:
1. Explore techniques that will aid in helping educators maintain self-control and orderly conduct in schools.
2. Explore various alternatives that have been proven to be successful in turning alienated youth in a positive direction.
3. Identify and learn new techniques of working with troubled youth in our schools.
4. Identify and study characteristics that seem to be common among the majority of our troubled youth.
5. To present structured experiences for improving human relation skills in dealing with troubled youth.
6. Explore ways to be proactive in protecting
educators from being harmed by violent youth.
Objectives Of The Course:
1. Participants will be able to collaborate with educators who work in various programs that have proven successful with troubled youth.
2. Participants will be able to interact with troubled youth who have put their lives on a positive track.
3. Participants will be able to develop an increased awareness of the general characteristics of troubled youth.
4. Participants will be able to have guided experiences in techniques that have proven successful in helping alienated youth.
5. Participants will be able to identify problem students and assist them in dealing with their problems.
6. Participants will be able to use various educational techniques to reduce school absenteeism, a leading indicator of troubled youth.
