As I lay paralyzed in a hospital ward years ago, feeling helpless, angry, afraid and confused...I made a conscious decision about how to spend the rest of my life. I would dedicate every ounce of energy to helping three groups of people I had grown to love and care about. I have dealt with all three groups in the dimmest hours of their frustrations, their discouragement, and their despair. These people are parents and teachers and the children in their charge.
With this goal, Charles R. Jackard, Ed.D., Charted a career in education that would change the lives of countless young people and their families. In his new book, Why Won't You Listen To Me! Our Children's Unheeded Cry, Dr. Jackard shares valuable insights into how we can answer the questions proposed by the title.
In addressing many of the disturbing trends associated with today's youth, among them, alarming increases in drug use, suicide, and violence-Dr. Jackard acknowledges that recognition of these problems is the first step toward improving conditions. He also cites another pothole adults fall into in dealing with the problems of today's children: being politically correct. The error in this, says Dr. Jackard, is that the funds spent on politically correct prisons and youth detention centers could be better spent in training for educators who must deal with these troubled young people.
Through specific examples, exercises, and insights gained from more than 25 years as a principal and director of an alternative middle and high school, Dr. Jackard addresses the problems facing today's youth and offers adults sound advice in dealing with these your people. His is not, as he says, "a plea for getting soft." It is, rather, "a plea for filtering compassion, understanding and acceptance into whatever standards of discipline and responsible action is required." This book offers good, sound advice for anyone interested in of involved with the young people of the 21st Century.
